Scientific Casting. When Vall casts a spell (or uses a spell-like power from a magic item or other source), he can apply his careful study of the laws of magic to double the spell’s duration (to a maximum of 24 hours). He can use Scientific Casting once, and must take a rest to regain the ability.

Ritual Casting. Vall can cast a wizard spell as a ritual if that spell has the ritual tag and he has the spell in his spellbook. He doesn’t need to have the spell prepared.
Arcane Recovery. Once per day when Vall finishes a short rest, he can choose expended spell slots to recover. The spell slots can have a combined leveI that is equal to or less than half his wizard leveI (rounded up), and none of the slots can be 6th leveI or higher.
Abjuration Savant. The gold and time Vall must spend to copy an abjuration spell into his spell book is halved.
Arcane Ward. When Vall casts an abjuration spell of 1st leveI or higher, he can simultaneously use a strand of the spell’s magic to create a magical ward on himself that lasts until he finishes a long rest. The ward has hit points equal to twice his wizard leveI + his Intelligence modifier. Whenever he takes damage, the ward takes the damage instead. lf this damage reduces the ward to 0 hit points, he takes any remaining damage. While the ward has 0 hit points, it can’t absorb damage, but its magic remains. Whenever he casts an abjuration spell of 1st leveI or higher, the ward regains a number of hit points equal to twice the leveI of the spell. Once he creates the ward, he can’t create it again until he finishes a long rest.

Vall Nailo is an Elven occult scientist and magician, born of Imystrahl. Unlike many of his kin, he is not addicted to the Black Milk and sees its widespread use as the end of Elven civilization. As a student of the arcane arts, he is driven to range far from his homeland to discover ancient magical secrets long forgotten by any people.
His work abroad was sponsored by the Elven archmage Imaelaree, whom he has not spoken with or seen in many years. He’s secretly hoping she has forgotten him, because he’s afraid that her plans for his work hold a darker intent than she lets on.
Vall’s recent travels have led him into the company ofDar Longstrider, a Dhari sell-sword who is rash and headstrong, though smarter than he lets on. Vall and Dar have saved each others’ lives several times in their travels together, and Dar is the closest thing Vall has to a friend, although their banter may at times seem biting to others.
- Personality Traits: I never have fewer than three books or journals on my person.
- Ideals: History. The ancient Atlanteans, the elven empires, the serpentmen and rakshasas—all these peoples knew things that have been forgotten. I mean to rediscover what has been lost.
- Bonds: My work is sponsored by a wealthy noble, but she hopes to use it for some dark purpose.
- Flaws: When people act foolishly, I respond with biting contempt.
